SAC, BW/4HANA and SAP Datasphere: who does what?
SAP Analytics Cloud reports and plans; your data can come from several foundations, which SAC uses through live connections without duplicating them.
SAP BW/4HANA
SAP’s data warehouse, on premise or in Private Cloud Edition. SAP is committed to it until at least 2040: SAC uses your existing models live.
SAP Datasphere
SAP’s cloud data layer, which federates SAP and non-SAP data while keeping their business meaning. It is the preferred source for new SAC projects.
SAP Business Data Cloud
Launched by SAP on 13 February 2025, the offering brings together SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP BW Private Cloud Edition and SAP-managed Databricks.

SAP Analytics Cloud: your questions
What is SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)?
It is SAP’s SaaS analytics solution: it brings business intelligence (dashboards), planning (budgets, forecasts) and AI-assisted predictive analytics together in one tool. It connects live to S/4HANA, BW/4HANA and SAP Datasphere, and also accepts non-SAP sources.
How does it differ from a traditional BI tool?
A classic BI tool reports on data; SAC also lets you change it to plan, with workflows, versions and collaborative input. Its live connection to SAP models avoids replicating data and keeps its security. Since February 2025, SAC has been part of SAP Business Data Cloud alongside SAP Datasphere.
Can you do budget planning?
Yes, it is one of its strengths: budgets, rolling forecasts, simulations and allocations are built in the same models as reporting. Contributors enter data in web forms and each version is compared with actuals from S/4HANA. A first budget cycle is usually deployed in three to four months.
Does SAC integrate with S/4HANA?
Yes, natively: SAC reads S/4HANA CDS views through a live connection, without replication, which guarantees figures identical to the ERP. For historical or multi-source analytics, data goes through SAP Datasphere or BW/4HANA. S/4HANA Cloud also includes an embedded edition of SAC for operational analytics.
