In brief
- Public Edition is a standardised multi-tenant SaaS, automatically updated twice a year.
- Private Edition is a dedicated environment that keeps the full scope of S/4HANA and your custom developments.
- RISE with SAP covers both editions; GROW with SAP targets Public Edition for new implementations.
- The end of standard maintenance for SAP ECC, on 31 December 2027, sets the decision timeline.
Moving to SAP S/4HANA Cloud is not just about going to the cloud. SAP offers two editions with very different logics, and the choice commits your migration path, your level of customisation and your update rhythm for years to come.
Two editions, one ERP core
S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is a multi-tenant SaaS offering: several customers share the same infrastructure, SAP runs operations and applies major updates twice a year, complemented by hotfixes every two weeks. Processes are based on SAP best practices, with controlled customisation.
S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition is a dedicated, single-tenant environment. It keeps the full functional scope of S/4HANA, accepts custom developments and lets the customer choose the timing of upgrades. It is the edition most used to convert an existing SAP ECC system.
The comparison at a glance
| Criterion | Public Edition | Private Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Multi-tenant SaaS | Dedicated single-tenant environment |
| Customisation | Configuration and controlled extensions (clean core) | Custom developments possible, clean core recommended |
| Updates | Two major releases a year, automatic; hotfixes every two weeks | At the pace chosen by the customer |
| Migration path | New implementation (Greenfield) | Conversion (Brownfield), Greenfield or selective (Bluefield) |
| Operations | Run by SAP | Infrastructure and technical operations run by SAP with RISE with SAP |
| Commercial offering | GROW with SAP or RISE with SAP | RISE with SAP |
| Typical profile | Mid-sized company or subsidiary, processes close to the standard | Large group with an ECC history and specific processes |
RISE with SAP or GROW with SAP?
RISE with SAP is the subscription contract that bundles S/4HANA Cloud, the infrastructure and support services. It is aimed primarily at existing SAP customers and covers both Public and Private Edition. GROW with SAP is designed for new customers, often mid-sized, who start on Public Edition with a Greenfield approach.
The ECC timeline weighs on the choice
SAP has set the end of standard maintenance for SAP ECC at 31 December 2027, with optional extended maintenance until the end of 2030. In February 2025, SAP announced a transition option, SAP ERP, private edition, for large customers with complex landscapes: it covers 2031 to 2033, provided the systems concerned have moved to private edition before the end of 2030.
In practice, a Brownfield conversion to Private Edition remains the most direct route for a group that has to meet these deadlines. Public Edition requires a new implementation, which is more transformative but takes longer to prepare.
How to decide: five questions
- What share of your processes actually deviates from the standard? Process mining can measure it.
- How many custom developments are still in use, and which ones are essential?
- Can you absorb two major updates a year, with the associated regression testing?
- Do you need industry solutions or functions that are not available in Public Edition?
- Which deadline do you have to meet given the end of ECC maintenance?
Clean core, the common thread of both editions
Whatever the edition, SAP recommends keeping the ERP core as close as possible to the standard and moving extensions to stable interfaces: published APIs, ABAP Cloud extensions or applications on SAP BTP. This discipline drives the cost of future upgrades. In Public Edition it is enforced; in Private Edition it remains a choice, best made during the conversion by sorting out the custom code that is actually used.
Frequently asked questions
Can an ECC system be converted to Public Edition?
No. Public Edition requires a new implementation: you carry over the useful data, not the existing system. To keep your history and your developments, a Brownfield conversion to Private Edition, or a selective approach, is the right path.
Is Private Edition really cloud?
Yes. It is hosted and operated in the cloud, with technical services provided by SAP as part of RISE with SAP. The difference with Public Edition lies in the dedicated environment, the freedom to customise and the update timeline, which you choose.
Can we move from Private to Public Edition later?
It is not an automatic conversion: moving to Public Edition means carrying out a new implementation. However, applying clean core principles in Private Edition today reduces the gap with the standard and makes any future move easier.
